Wayne County History:

Wayne County came into being in 1803 from cession of Creek Indian land. Present boundaries include part of old Appling County. Glynn, Camden and Charlton counties later drew territory from Wayne. Its name honors General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, a flamboyant fighter from Pennsylvania who conducted daring exploits against the British in several southern campaigns during the Revolutionary War. For a brief time, he also represented Georgia as a member of Congress. Jesup, the county seat, is named for General Thomas Jesup who fought Creek Indians along the border in 1836.
